Digital Storytelling is the intersection between the age- old art of storytelling and access to powerful technology that is easy to learn and use.

Planning

What exactly is storytelling?
First we need to examine the definition and elements of a story, what is involved in telling one, and how this fits into education. I know you are probably thinking “where is the digital?” All in good time, first we need to learn what makes quality stories. Imagine if I gave you a bunch of woodworking tools and told you to build Rococo Furniture. You would probably want a picture and some plans, same with storytelling. If we just turn people loose with a microphone and a camera who knows what they will come back with, but it probably will not be a very good story.
Goals
  1. You will be able to provide a personal definition for a story and storytelling.
  2. You will have an understanding of the basic story structure.
  3. You will generate some ideas about the story you would like to tell.

Brainstorming

Brainstorming and the mind mapping play two roles in this process. The initial brainstorm allow you to generate lots of story ideas. Once you have narrowed down to one idea, brainstorming and mindmapping helps to create a framework for the script and to weed out ideas that are not robust enough to pursue. Here are some resources for this phase.
  • bubbl.us is a web based tool very similar to inspiration. Allows for quick fire brainstorming in a browser.

Before you move to the script you should have created a fairly substantial mind map to guide you.

Scriptwriting

With your mind map in hand it is time to develop your script. Your script should be around one page long (double spaced) in order to fill the 2 – 5 minutes.

  1. Work with short sentences. Remember that your words will be accompanied by images, so you do not have to do as much descriptive language.
  2. Write from the first person. narrate from your viewpoint, or record the person narrating.
  3. Look for a way to immediately grab the readers attention.
  4. Read your script aloud as you write it.

Creating

Now that you have brainstormed a topic, flushed it out and thoughtfully developed a script it is time to move into the production phase. This phase can be simple or can become a Hollywood production. I would recommend that unless your last name is Speilberg that you start nearer towards the simple end of the continuum.

iMovie

IMovie is a proprietary video editing software application which allows Mac, iPod Touch 4th generation, iPhone 4 and iPad 2 users to edit their own home movies. iMovie imports video footage to the Mac using either the FireWire interface on most MiniDV format digital video cameras, the USB port, or by importing the files from a hard drive. From there, the user can edit the video clips, add titles, and add music. Effects include basic color correction and video enhancement tools, and transitions such as fade-in, fade-out, and slides.
